Copa Favela 2014 is the "Caneco das Peladas"

(caneco is the plastic cup used by the poor, pelada is bare foot soccer from the streets, organized on the spot without money).

During the soccer mega-happening, we will play pelada, make art and talk about the reality in the communities without FIFA's consent.

A mixture of the performing bands on the Recbeat festival with impressionistic short shortfilms on Recife during it's crazy carnival make you discover the social engagement of the Manguebeat-movement.

Recbeat is the very special music festival during Carnaval in Recife, Brazil.
It started 13 years ago as the Polo Mangue, the stage with all the bands of the Manguebeat.
Meanwhile Recbeat also brings music from other parts of Brazil, South America and even Africa, as long as it fits in their concept.
The festival still breaths the spirit of the early days with Chico Science, a combination of social engagement with renewing music with respect for the musical and cultural tradition.

God en klein Pierke blogt, ik ook dan maar.

In 2002 ging ik naar 'RecBeat', een muziekfestival in Recife, Brazilië

en de vlam sloeg in de pan. Ik ben net terug van mij vijfde Brazilië-reis. 

'RecBeat' (van Recife Beat) is een gratis festival, het is één van de vele podia tijdens carnaval. Het is het 'Mangue podium' (Pólo Mangue), met een mix van zowel traditionele muziek als rock, punk, funk, hiphop, elektronica en alles waar de alternatieve scène vandaag mee bezig is.

Mangue staat hier voor 'Mangue Beat', een beweging uit de jaren 90, de belangrijkste muzikale vernieuwing in Brazilië sinds het Tropicalismo van de jaren 60.

Het zal in deze blog veel over 'Mangue' gaan.  Over de 'MangueBeat' maar ook over de 'mangue' zelf, want mangue is Portugees voor mangrove. 

Mangroves behoren tot de rijkste ecosystemen van onze aarde.

Je vindt ze in de tropen waar zoet rivierwater het zoute zeewater ontmoet. Recife, de tropische deltastad van Noordoost Brazilië, is volledig op de mangroves gebouwd. Of beter: veroverd op de mangroves. De estuaria werden droog gelegd en de mangue moest uitwijken naar de rand van het water.

Recife is een stad vol water en bijgevolg ook vol mangue.

En,
zoals alle grote steden in Brazilië,
vol met rijkdom maar nog voller met armoede.

Wie het in Recife over de Mangue heeft bedoelt meestal de favela's, de sloppenwijken aan de rand van het water, in de modder van de mangroves. De mangue-favela's zijn zowat de ergste plaatsen om te wonen. Geweld, drugs en afval. De mensen leven er midden in de vuilnis van de rijke stad. Ze delen hun woonplaats met ratten, slangen, schorpioenen, gele koorts, dengue en malaria.

En,

ik hou van die mensen.

Ik probeer met foto en video hun blijdschap - hun 'alegria' - te vatten.
